From the recording Since Melvin Left Memphis
I wrote this for the Memphis sessions. The guys never really like it. I think this is the first time I used accordion on a song. My wife (fiancée then who had come down to visit during the sessions) helped me with one "drone" note because I could barely play it at all. What an idiot.
Lyrics
She said she was a hit-and-run angel with miracles to make
Prepared to spread her salt of salvation on the pathetic human race
So I suggested that covert operations might outmaneuver deliberate acts
It's best to let the beast look in the mirror if you want it to meet its match
And I don't need no answers I'm quite content with why
I've been to the place where the dinosaurs go to die where the dinosaurs go to die
You ever notice how those in institutions tend to lose their middle name?
It makes no sense when you've got nowhere to go to remember from where you came
Like the migrant workers with their hands in the dirt as the sun beats upon their backs
You might pretend that it's some kind of freedom that makes up for the things they lack
And I've seen the lines on the faces of those who never cry
Cause I've been to the place where the dinosaurs go to die
And I don't need no answers I'm quite content with why
Cause I've been to the place where the dinosaurs go to die where the dinosaurs go to die
May the volcanoes rumble may the hurricanes blow
May the rainforest tumble may the ash turn to snow
May we all stop in wonder as the last turn to go
Sometimes I think for every history written down there's another we can't explain
Then my frightened stupid little view of the world reminds me I can't complain
For every empire that crashes down there's another to take its place
But we're too busy building we never stop to imagine that it all might be just a waste
Cause when the dry ground cracks and the tar pits bubble and the meteors fall from the sky
There'll be furry little creatures in the rocks and the rumble
Waiting to take over in the melting of an eye
Cause I've been to the place where the dinosaurs go to die
And I don't need no answers I'm quite content with why
And I've been to the place where the dinosaurs go to die where the dinosaurs go to die
Where the dinosaurs go to die
