From the recording Peace is Not a Fashion

The opening of this is me singing through a vacuum hose. We did a lot of that kind of "trying to be the Beatles" stuff. The guys hated the lyrics to this but liked the groove. Rudy had just fallen in love with his first PRS guitar, hence the ridiculously high not at the end of the solo.

Lyrics

I used to look for the real thing
I thought I'd need to live
But I got older and doubts came clear
And a kinder, gentler numbness set in
I gave up on God and religion
Instead I live my life through the soaps
No need for crystals or techno-zen magicians
To fill me with the false sense of hope no, no

Still I remember how that Catholic mass
Could make me fumble and quiver
The whole Western world waiting for its whipping boy
As if only he can deliver

The real thing, the real thing

I used to think that love was the answer
but it always seemed to leave me alone
I thought that travel might get me there faster
But all it did was drag me from zone to zone to zone
I gave up on self-actualization
Cause I skipped a few steps on the way
I tried believing in reincarnation
But I couldn't handle Shirley Mclaine, no, no

Why is it so hard to believe
It's a one-time, one-way gift?
You know sometimes life is like sweet meringue
You just got to beat it up until it's stiff
And reach out and touch the real thing
The real thing
The real thing
The real thing

Idle chatter to the best of intentions
Why is digging up the answers so tough?
Just look around now baby
And soon you will find
There's too much talk but not enough

The real thing
The real thing
The real thing
The real thing
The real, the real, the real thing
The real, the real, the real thing
