From the recording King Cake & Carmelites
The opening of this is a separate song my brother wrote around the same time. Since they had the same hook, we agreed to put them together.
Of all the love songs for my wife, this one actually sounds a little like one. Most of the others (Johnny Used to Always Think Too Much, The Cavalry Song, Kiss on that Woman, Testament, All About You) -- not so much. The other one that does is "Loving You is My Life's Work" on After All This Time.
Lyrics
She's the one
And I can't explain what it does
When I hear her voice
Will she come
When she's done with all
That hurts her inside
She's the one
But my body aches
When she says
That she can't escape
What has been
When she turns her head
I just can't ignore
The way she looks at me
There must be something
When I touched her
I felt her shudder
She shines like the sun
She's the one
She's the one
She's the one
She's the one
Friday morning, All Saint's Day
Looking over my shoulder
I can't seem to shake off these ghosts, no
With black coffee and dry rye toast, no
And that mask stares back like it knows, no
That I surely don't deserve this
She's such a diamond girl
She looks so out of place in
My"change for bus fare" world
So I'm giddy like a schoolboy in a photograph
On my best behavior trying not to laugh
Wondering if I'm smart enough
To count my blessings
And wise enough to reap their reward
But something's there to haunt me
It always has before
The party's never over
The trick is at the door
I'm not the universal martyr
That I think I am
Like a fatalistic singer
In a self-important band
Counting up the suffering of all the ages
I tell myself I wear it well
For the first time my eyes are open
Like I've been staring at the sun
I'm not sure why the spell was broken
Is it something she said
Something she's done
If there's a reason, I don't care
As long as she ends what she's begun
Cause she's the one
She's the one
She's the one
Who's always there to catch me
She's the one
Blowing kisses from the door
She's the one
Who always makes me stronger
She's the one
The one that I adore
Wondering if I'm smart enough
To count my blessings
For the first time my eyes are open
Like I've been staring at the sun
I'm not sure why the spell was broken
Was it something she said
Something she's done
If there's a reason, I don't care
As long as she ends what she's begun
Cause she's the one
She's the one
She's the one
Sunday morning, All Saint's Day
It's been seven years on now
And I guess I'm simply amazed
That I haven't driven her away
And I'm just so thankful she stays
Whatever the reason
Let it take me
As long as she ends
What she's begun
Cause she's the one
She's the one
She's the one
She's the one
She's the one
She's the one
