From the recording After All This Time

Something’s Got to Give (2010) – This one began as a scene in a club we always used to play then the story ended up in Vegas. I don’t know why. I like the odd time signatures (thanks, Neil Peart & Joe Morello) but I wish I’d played the drum parts better. I also like the U2 vibe moments. Oh – and Marky B, Marty Alloco & Graham Wolfe are monsters.

Lyrics

Something’s Got to Give
Just breathe out, then breathe in knee deep in sin
I can’t begin to understand the mess that I’ve made
It’s taken year to get here, never fear
the crowd appears but still you feel alone and afraid
The pit boss grins and lets you in
The champagne flows as the fun begins
Throw the chips down and call all in
then she says come on come on
Whose gonna break you? Whose gonna take you in
Wild-eyed and primitive – but something’s got to give
An empty room with lights out, black and white
The moon shines bright enough
to shame the strip here at night
Always the imposter, count the cost you’ve never lost
But then again tonight you just might
By the backstage door she says goodnight
Her face glows bright in the cell phone light
For once in your life you’ll do what’s right
‘til she says come on come on
Whose gonna shake you out of the sleep you’re in
Back into life again ‘cause something’s got to give
Pretend to fake through fess up to where you’ve been
Then hide like a fugitive but something’s got to give
Whose gonna break you? Whose gonna take you in
Wild-eyed and primitive – but something’s got to give
Who won’t forsake you there on the final spin
It don’t matter if you win ‘cause something’s got to give
