From the recording After All This Time

Two Fathers (2001) – Unlike most of my songs, this one is somewhat autobiographical. One of my dad’s has a hard time listening to this and the other has an even harder time hearing anything at all. It’s okay; they both know how I feel.

Lyrics

Two Fathers
Declare no holiday, erect no shrine
Don’t need no witnesses watching me testify
I can only say what’s mine all mine
And it was always enough
And I hear both their voices
when I’m thinking things over
And I see them smile when I’m done
And I know I’m one of the lucky ones to have
Two fathers, two fathers, two fathers to call me son
I have two fathers to call me son
It doesn’t matter where it all begins
It doesn’t matter what the circumstance might have been
Between my mother’s love and these two men
It was always enough
And I see their hands in the work that I do
And I hear their words on my tongue
And I hope they’re proud of the things I’ve done
I have two fathers
two fathers, two fathers to call me son
I have two fathers to call me son
One by blood and one by choice
And both out of selfless love for this boy gave me…
